Pinatalandia, Stamford Downtown’s new party supply store, makes the art of piñatas ‘a family affair’

STAMFORD — Like most beautiful things, Pinatalandia was born out of extreme pressure.

After 10 years of working as a professional house cleaner, the pandemic bled Mercy Ramirez dry. Her clients canceled their services. The previously steady stream of money that in part supported Ramirez, her husband Hector and their four kids evaporated overnight.

Then she remembered the piñata-making class she’d taken as a high school student in Guatemala.

“I never thought I would be making a living doing this,” Ramirez said while walking around Pinatalandia, her family’s new business on the outskirts of Downtown Stamford which opened on March 10. The name translates simply to Piñata Land from Spanish, and its wares live up to the name.
